Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King: Thy Kingdom Come!

We say these words – “thy Kingdom come” -- so often we tend to forget what we are really praying for. Especially now, at the close of this liturgical year, the Church chooses for us Scriptures which speak of both the reign of the Son of God in glory and the sacrifice of Jesus, the Son of God, made in behalf of our redemption. Perhaps the first and most well-known prayer in our Christian repertoire is The Lord’s Prayer, which is found in the Christian Scriptures, in both Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke11:2-4. Here Jesus is teaching his disciples how to live and how to pray. Jesus invites his disciples to pray for the coming of the Kingdom of God in their – and our – midst. The Gospel of today, taken from the Passion narrative of John’s Gospel, portrays the proclamation of Jesus of his central role in the kingdom of God – a spiritual kingdom, not the sort of reign that the Roman and Jewish leaders readily understood.
When we pray for the coming of the kingdom, the reign of God, we are in truth, praying for our salvation, that we may be part of the reign of God. The coming of the reign of God is the final and complete sanctification of all those who are faithful and have honored God’s name. Even those who externally seem to have been alienated from God may have received, in their final moments of life, the grace of faith and conversion. Everyone is invited to enter the kingdom of God. No one is excluded except those who choose to exclude themselves.
The fulfillment of God’s saving action, experienced in and through Jesus Christ, results in the disciples being brought together to praise and honor God. That is our call, our prayer: each day may our lives and energies be given in service to the Lord Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, the King of heaven and earth.

Nuestro Señor Cristo Rey: ¡Venga a nosotros tu reino!

Decimos las palabras; “venga a nosotros tu reino”, tantas veces que tendemos a olvidar lo que realmente estamos rezando. Especialmente ahora al cierre de éste año litúrgico, la Iglesia escoge para nosotros escrituras que nos hablan de ambos el reino y gloria del Hijo de Dios y del sacrificio de Jesús, Hijo de Dios enviado para nuestra redención. Quizás la primera y más conocida oración en nuestro repertorio cristiano es El Padre Nuestro, que se puede encontrar en los Evangelios de San Mateo 6,9-13 y San Lucas 11,2-4. Aquí Jesús enseña a sus discípulos cómo vivir y cómo orar. Jesús invita a sus discípulos a orar por la llegada del Reino de Dios a ellos y a nosotros. El Evangelio de hoy, tomado de la escritura de la Pasión narrada por San Juan, muestra la proclamación de Jesús en su papel central en el Reino de Dios, un reino espiritual, no el tipo de reino que captaron los romanos y judíos.
Cuando rezamos por le venida del Reino de Dios, estamos realmente rezando por nuestra salvación y por ser parte de su reino. La venida del Reino de Dios es la santificación final y completa de todos aquellos fieles que han honrado el nombre de Dios. Incluso aquellos quienes pudieron haberse alejado de Dios, podrían recibir en sus momentos finales de vida, la gracia de la fe y por ende su conversión. Todos estamos invitados a entrar al Reino de Dios. A nadie se excluye excepto aquellos que deciden excluirse así mismos.
El cumplimiento de la acción salvadora de Dios experimentada en y a través de Cristo Jesús, resulta en la unificación de los discípulos para adorar y honrar a Dios. Ese es nuestro llamado, nuestra oración: que dediquemos cada día de nuestra vida y energía al servicio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, nuestro Salvador, Rey del cielo y de la tierra.

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT: WELCOMING THE YEAR OF LUKE!

As begin our new liturgical year, with the season of Advent expectations, we welcome in the “Year of Luke” – the primary Gospel of this Liturgical Year Cycle C. Some characteristics of the Gospel of Luke include the Infancy narratives, the visit by shepherds (the Gospel of Matthew is the other source of our stories of the infancy of Jesus, the story of the Magi and the Flight into Egypt); several unique parables and miracle stories. Luke’s Gospel emphasizes Jesus’ mission to the poor and outcasts; he also includes more inclusive stories – the role of women is stronger in Luke than in other gospels. This Gospel also has many stories of Jesus teaching his disciples in the context of a shared meal. The parable of the Prodigal Son and the post-resurrection story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus are unique to Luke, and are pivotal in understanding the deeper meaning of Luke’s gospel. There will be other wonder-filled insights that unfold during this liturgical year.
The Scriptures of this Sunday point us to living in hope and the need for conversion and preparation for the coming of the Lord in our lives. It is not just the mystery and miracle of Christmas that we look to – it is also the presence of the grace and blessing of the resurrected Jesus Christ in our daily lives. We know that we have been redeemed – our anticipation of the birth of Christ is not as if it has not yet happened. The Gospel selection from Luke is taken from the close of the public life of Jesus, before the Last Supper, rather than from the Prologue or beginning of the Gospel. The importance of being prepared, hope-filled and vigilant is key here. Advent is a season that reminds us to live each day in a faith-filled meaningful way – that we are ready, each day, to welcome the Lord Jesus into our hearts and our lives.
What are we doing, day by day, to prepare for the Lord’s presence in our lives? To celebrate the great love and mercy which are God’s gift to all God’s children? May we stand ready to welcome our redemption!

PRIMER DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO:
¡RECIBIENDO EL AÑO DE SAN LUCAS!

En lo que damos inicio a nuestro nuevo año litúrgico, recibimos en éste “Año de San Lucas” el Evangelio central del Ciclo “C” junto con las expectativas de la temporada de Adviento. Algunas características del Evangelio de San Lucas incluyen las narraciones de la infancia de Jesús, la visita de los pastores, algunas parábolas únicas y narraciones sobre los milagros (el Evangelio de San Mateo es la otra fuente que nos habla sobre la Infancia de Jesús, sobre los Reyes Magos y del viaje a Egipto). El Evangelio de San Lucas enfatiza la misión de Jesús hacia los pobres y los marginados. También incluye narraciones sobre cómo el papel de las mujeres es más significante que en otros evangelios. Este Evangelio también contiene muchas narraciones sobre las enseñanzas de Jesús a sus discípulos en el contexto del alimento compartido. La parábola del Hijo Pródigo y la historia en la post-resurrección sobre los discípulos en el Camino a Emaús son únicas de San Lucas, y son cruciales para entender el significado más profundo de su evangelio. Durante éste año litúrgico se desarrollarán otras introspectivas llenas de maravillas.
Las Escrituras de éste domingo nos señalan a vivir en la esperanza y en la necesidad a la conversión y a la preparación a recibir al Señor en nuestras vidas. No se trata sólo sobre el misterio y el milagro de la Navidad en lo que nos centramos, es también la presencia de la gracia y la bendición de Cristo Jesús resucitado que recibimos en nuestras vidas diarias. Sabemos que hemos sido redimidos, nuestra anticipación al nacimiento de Cristo no es como si todavía no ha sucedido. Los pasajes escogidos del Evangelio de San Lucas narran el cierre de la vida pública de Jesús antes de la Ultima Cena, en lugar del prólogo o principio del Evangelio. La importancia de estar preparados llenos de esperanza y vigilantes a todo es la clave aquí. El tiempo de Adviento es una temporada que nos recuerda a vivir cada día en una forma llena de fe y propósito para recibir al Señor Jesús en nuestros corazones y en nuestras vidas.
¿Qué es lo que hacemos día a día en nuestras vidas para prepararnos a la presencia del Señor, para celebrar el amor y la misericordia que da Dios a sus hijos? ¡Que estemos preparados a recibir nuestra redención!

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT: PROPHETS AND WITNESSES

Having heard the call to conversion, we turn in this week’s Scriptures toward the message of the prophets and witnesses of God’s Word and the reign of God’s Chosen One. This is the call to continuing conversion – the voice of the prophet Baruch assuring the people of Israel – and all God’s people -- that they will be strengthened and comforted by their trust in God who will remember them and guide them.
That note of hope continues in the letter of Paul to the Philippians – telling them of his great care and confidence in their discipleship of Jesus Christ. A second insight into his message also echoes the proclamation of the prophets Baruch and John in the Gospel: it is as the people of God that we work out our salvation – the call to greater holiness comes to us as a community, as well as to each of us who take our personal responsibility to hear and respond to the Word.
This is a week to celebrate the greatest witness to the message of redemption and the call to holiness: On December 8 we celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception – the very beginning of the life of Mary when she is conceived without sin in the womb of her mother, St. Anne. This amazing grace is God’s gift to the person who will later accept the invitation to become the mother of the Son of God made human. We also celebrate the feast of Mary on December 12 as Our Lady of Guadalupe, who appeared to Juan Diego near Mexico City in December 1531. Under this title, Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe, has been declared the patroness of all the Americas, all peoples of our two continents, and in a special way, she is the patroness of our Diocese. Devotion to Mary and understanding her role in salvation history is knowing that she is, indeed, a most special witness to God’s love and mercy.
More than ever we realize and celebrate that Mary is the model and patroness for all the faithful, calling us to holiness, as does John in the region by the Jordan river, calling all people to prepare the way of the Lord.

SEGUNDO DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO:
PROFETAS Y TESTIGOS

Habiendo escuchado el llamado a la conversión en las Escrituras de ésta semana, centramos nuestra atención en el mensaje de los profetas y los testigos de la palabra de Dios y en el Reino del Elegido de Dios. Este es el llamado a continuar la conversión, la voz del profeta Baruc asegurando al pueblo de Israel y a todo el pueblo de Dios, que serán fortalecidos y confortados por su confianza en Dios quien se acordará de ellos y los guiará.
Estas palabras de esperanza aparecen también en la carta de San Pablo a los Filipenses, en la que les habla sobre su gran cuidado y confianza en su discipulado por Cristo Jesús. Una segunda introspectiva de su mensaje hace también eco sobre la proclamación de los profetas Baruc y Juan, éste segundo en el Evangelio. Como el pueblo de Dios, buscamos nuestra salvación en el llamado a una mayor santidad, que viene a nosotros en comunidad y en forma personal y asumimos la responsabilidad de escuchar y responder a la Palabra de Dios.
Esta es una semana para celebrar el testimonio más grande del mensaje de la redención y el llamado a la santidad. El 8 de diciembre celebramos la fiesta de la Inmaculada Concepción, que es el principio mismo de la vida de María cuando es concebida sin pecado en el vientre de su madre, Santa Ana. Esta impresionante gracia de pureza es el don que Dios le da a la persona quien después aceptará la invitación a ser la Madre de Dios hecho hombre. También celebramos a María el 12 de diciembre como Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, quien se apareció a Juan Diego cerca de la Ciudad de México en el año de 1531. Bajo éste título, María, Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, ha sido declarada la patrona de las Américas y en forma especial es patrona de nuestra Diócesis. Nuestra devoción a María y nuestra comprensión de su papel en la historia de la salvación, nos a ayuda a entender que ella de hecho, es quien nos da el testimonio más especial sobre el amor y la misericordia de Dios.
Ahora más que nunca nos damos cuenta que María es modelo y patrona de todos los fieles, llamándonos a la santidad, tal como lo hizo Juan en la región del Río Jordán, llamando a la gente a prepararse para la venida del Señor.
